Cougar Jumps In My Path

This post comes from my one of my journals from about five years ago.  I was making big changes in my life and found this dream experience to be confirmation that I was on the correct path for me.

In my dream, I was walking down a logging road that wound through some open meadows where the trees had been cut down, and then meandered into forest.  As I walked through a more heavily wooded area, I heard a grunt, and a large Cougar jumped down on the path in front of me.  It seemed to ignore me, and walked ahead of me, much like one of my dogs.

I remember one of my friends sending me some information on Cougar after I had an experience with it a year ago.  Here is what she sent:

Cougar can appear without being noticed and quietly take control of a situation. Sometimes this can lead to conflict with others over territory. Those with cougar medicine have past life connections relating to power and leadership. When the cougar selects you as its student be prepared for the ride of your life. It can shred you into little pieces (dissolve karma and identity) then put you back together again with a pure heart and purpose. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem.

Cougar Cares!

Cougar is out in the foothills, east of the mountains, these days because it feels a change coming to the areas west of the mountain ranges.  It comes out to talk to people, and instead, scares them, because people know that Cougar is a ruthless predator.  Cougar wanders the countryside, hoping for someone who will listen.  She hears the rumblings in the Earth.  It sounds like the rocks grinding together in an avalanche.  She notices that the ground animals seem to be more above ground, then below.  A time of change is coming, she says.  This change simply means that one needs to move to a new hunting territory.  And so she moves.

Cougar Watches - Spirit Animal

My friends have a Cougar or Mountain Lion, living in their forest behind their house and farm yard.  You can tell when it is in the trees, watching who is coming and going, because all the horses move to the fence closest to it, and watch back.  The horses stamp their feet and neigh, and then after a while, go back to grazing.

When I was in meditation, I contemplated the Cougar and why it was watching the yard so intently.  It seems that it is watching for something that is not in the highest interests of the people and other animals.  This Cougar, so far, has not attacked the dog, chickens, horses, or cattle. Cougar seems to be well fed and unconcerned about the animals roaming about.  

Cougar, in this case, seems very guardian-like.  At night, sometimes, my friends can hear the Cougar make its coughing roar.  It is very much like a warning to stay away.  It is true that legends tell of the great cat who protects tribal villages, and warns the tribe when danger is coming.  

Perhaps this gift of service from Cougar is being reinstated with my friends.  I am looking forward to meeting Cougar out in Nature, at their place.
