Kodiak Bear In My Meditation

         image

I sat in meditation and breathed slowly sinking into a place of a running river, flowing over and around rocks.  Forest bordered the river about fifty feet from the sides of the river.  I then became conscious of movement to the right of me.  There was a very, very large brownish red bear.  I was startled even though I knew I had nothing to fear.

I welcomed the bear.  He replied that he was a Kodiak Bear.  He had some sharing to provide to the world.

  • Do not be afraid to let your unique abilities shine through at this time.  Each of us has a different way of dealing with a situation.  The time for you to act is now.
  • Find your mate, and stick with them.  Each of you is drawn to the other so that you both may grow.  It is the way of things.
  • Use your language and your body stance to defend your position.  It will earn you respect.  Fighting does not earn any  respect, and instead, demeans who you are.
  • Define what you are able to do, what you are good at, and what you are great at.  Pursue the greatness in you.  It emerges at the most appropriate time.

I thanked Kodiak, and he drifted away.

Blessings,

Judy

Sea Gull is a Spirit Animal

Sea gulls live in seaports and around big water.  There are many gulls in Calgary as they follow the river system.

What do we know about gulls?  Well, many of us are fans of the book “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” because it was about following your heart and achieving as much as you could achieve.  It was inspirational and a heart warming story at the same time.  Yet, Sea Gull is often chased away and regarded as a nuisance bird.  Why is that?

Sea gulls live in seaports and around big water.  There are many gulls in Calgary as they follow the river system.

What do we know about Sea Gull?  Sea Gull eats rubbish, pulls apart garbage bags if they smell good, eats dead fish as well as live ones, eats dead meat that washes onto shore or is road kill, eats vegetation, and makes messy nests out of whatever garbage it can find.  Sea Gull is noisy – she talks all the time to all those in the flock around her. There is a very loose social structure in the flock, and yet it is honoured.

So, if Sea Gull shows up in your life, what message is she bringing you?  It may be several messages or one message that will resonate with you.  Sea Gull shows up because:

  1. She finds garbage around your house/yard and she is telling you to start recycling, reusing, and rethinking what you are eating and buying and throwing away.
  2. She says you are eating out too much or eating too many packaged foods.  She eats what is immediately around her – the original 100 mile diet.  Are you eating healthily?  Sea Gull does – even if we consider it garbage.
  3. Sea Gull flies around and soars and wheels and has fun.  She asks you to lighten up and go out and try new things – yell a little.  Making noise is good for your primal self.
  4. Are you too quiet?  Do you need to find some friends?  Sea Gull has a lot of friends and is quite comfortable expressing herself.  Perhaps you need to take lessons about communicating and about relationship building from Sea Gull.
  5. Sea Gull treats her flock members with fairness and respect. Situations like first come, first served are common and the others wait.  Are you too pushy?  Do you respect others, or do you consider yourself above the common Gull?

Enjoy the teachings of Sea Gull.  She does not usually show up often.

Blessings,

Judy

A Personal Creed

A quiet place for reflection in Fish Creek Park - by Judy Hirst

When one thinks of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, one thinks of valour, and of a creed of goodness or honour.  It will not surprise you to find that "Creed" means a "set of beliefs or guiding principles" (from the merriam-webster.com online dictionary).

History admires knights or anyone who seems to hold fast to principles of integrity and truth.  Why?  Because today, we no longer work with truth and integrity as part of our every day lives in business.  A popular sales tool is called "bait and switch".  The goal is to get the buyer interested in a mythological set of goods, and then actually sell the buyer something quite different.  Where is the integrity in that?  Corporations sell based on making money and producing revenue for shareholders. Shoddy workmanship, falsified lists of ingredients or list of parts, and mislabelled packages are all part of the "game" to improve the bottom line.

With such examples in our every day lives, it almost seems impossible for an individual to avoid replicating the examples from the workplace.  Buddhists have the five precepts that they live by:

  • Abstain from destroying life
  • Abstain from stealing
  • Abstain from sexual misconduct
  • Abstain from lies
  • Abstain from intoxicating drinks

These five precepts are actually their creed for their way of life - a way of life that has been around since the first day of Buddha.  Many people find these precepts difficult to understand.

Shaman suggest that each of us create our own creed or way of life.  Therefore, when we violate our creed, we immediately "feel" the breach of trust with our self, and we react to repair the damage.

Here are some ideas for a personal creed.

  • I will be good to my body.
  • I will be truthful to myself and others.
  • I will treat all living things with respect.
  • I will honour the rights of all human beings to be the individuals they are with their own Sacred Points of View.
  • I will embrace my faith, and I will trust the Creator's divine guidance.
  • I will see all experiences in my life as ways to grow with lessons to learn.
  • I will strive to be my personal best without comparing my path to others.   (Suggestions from DANCING THE DREAM by Jamie Sams)j0430790
  • Being good to your body means the right foods should be consumed!  Picture from Microsoft Clip Art....

When each of these ideas is examined, one says, "Why wouldn't I follow these beliefs?"  The interesting answer is that often, in order to work at a job each day, one cannot have many of these beliefs because the beliefs at work conflict with the beliefs of the person.

When one sits in Meditation and asks how to resolve the incongruity of the work place and the person, Angels may answer and simply tell the person to leave their job.  To work at something that does not treat humans with respect is not healing or loving.  When we have a creed of honour, we crave the feeling of Oneness with all things -much like the Shaman of old were seen to be filled with peace and a spirit that directly linked to the Heavens.

The creed that our ancestors lived with was about being in balance, recognizing Nature/Mother Earth as the provider of all food and water and air - simply, the provider of everything.  Corporations with all of their material goods, do not provide everything that we need. Perhaps it is time for all of us to develop a creed.

    What will your creed be?

    Blessings,

    Giving

    image

An act of giving is of most benefit when one gives something of value, carefully, with one’s own hand, while showing respect, and with a view that something wholesome will come of it. The same is true when one gives out of faith, respectfully, at the right time, with a generous heart, and without causing denigration.  - Andrew Olendzki, "Dana: The Practice of Giving"

I was putting together a bag of clothes that we no longer use, and looked around the house for stuff – knick knacks, jewellery, dishes – that we no longer use.  I am working at getting our household to a simpler level of maintenance.

When I sat down at my computer, I was pleased to see the above quote sitting in my inbox on my mail.  I love this quote!  While I don’t necessarily hand deliver everything, I certainly select what I give with much thought, and, I test to see whether the object is for the best and highest good of the receiver.  I also test to see if the object is good over the next year, if the answer is ‘yes, this is good for the receiver’.  If the object is only good for a day or a week, to me, there is no point in giving it.

I like to give things to my family and to my friends.  I especially like to give herbs and aloe vera slips to people because the plants are so helpful.  What I have found too, is that plants like to move from place to place – at least some of them do.  So, for me, giving a plant is a win-win for the person and the plant.

I often wonder if, at the back of what is going on, Creator and my Angels are having a chuckle at how easily they can guide me to give something to someone who needs it.  I don’t mean that they are laughing at me; I mean, they are laughing with joy because I am joyful at the time, too.

    Many Blessings,

    Judy

    Values from the Elders

Several weeks ago, a friend mailed me a list of actions recommended by elders in several indigenous clans.  I do not know where this originated, however, each reminder strikes a chord in me.

When I was growing up, my parents were wonderful examples of Reminder 4.  All guests were treated with respect and honor.  Everyone was fed with the best of what was on hand.  This value my parents learned from their parents, my Ancestors.

As you read through the reminders, check in with yourself to see how or whether you follow these life values.

    15 REMINDERS FROM THE ELDERS:

    1. Get up with the sun to pray. Pray alone.

    2. Be tolerant of those who have lost their way. Ignorance, presumption, anger, jealousy and greed come from a lost soul. Pray for them to find guidance.

    3. Find yourself, by your own means. Do not let others make your path for you. It is your path, and only yours. Others may walk with you, but no one can make your way (or walk your path) for you.

    4. Treat guests in your home with great consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor.

    5. Do not take what is not yours, whether from a person, a community, from the jungle or from a culture. It was not given or won. It is not yours.

    6. Respect all the things that are on this earth, be they people, plants and animals.

    7. Honor the thoughts, desires and words of all people. Never break them in, or make fun of them, or imitate them rudely. It gives each person the right to their personal expression.

    8. Never talk about others in a bad way. The negative energy you put into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.

    9. All people make mistakes. And all the mistakes can be forgiven.

    10. Bad thoughts cause illness to the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism.

    11. Nature is not FOR us. It is PART of us. She's part of your family in the world.

    12. Children are the seeds of our future. Sow love in your hearts and water them with wisdom and life lessons. When they grow up, just give them space to grow up.

    13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of their suffering will return to you.

    14. Be true (transparent ) all the time. Honesty is the test of one's will in this universe.

    15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental person, your Spiritual person, your Emotional person, and your Physical person: they all have the need to be strong, pure and healthy.

May each of you have a peaceful, wonderful day,

    Many blessings,
    Judy
